Trinidad and Tobago’s premier track and field stars, Jereem Richards and Keshorn Walcott, got their Diamond League campaigns underway over the past week, with both athletes securing podium finishes in their opening appearances.

Last Sunday, May 31, Walcott, the reigning World Athletics javelin champion, finished third at the Rabat Diamond League in Morocco with a throw of 82.52 metres. Four days later, at the Rome Diamond League on June 4, he improved his season's best to 83.45m but had to settle for fourth place.

Top honours in Rome went to Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, whose massive throw of 92.62m not only shattered his national record but also established a new world-leading mark for the season.

Richards picked up the baton in Stockholm, Sweden, today, placing third in the men's 400m in a season-best 44.87 seconds. With a bronze medal from the World Athletics Indoor Championships already under his belt this year, Richards now faces what could be his toughest challenge yet when he lines up in a stacked 200m field at the Oslo Diamond League on June 10.

While some are chasing diamonds and glory, football fans are counting down the days until the 2026 Fifa World Cup kicks off on June 11. Yes, it’s that close.

The past week served up plenty of international football action, with Côte d’Ivoire producing the standout result by coming from behind to defeat 2022 World Cup finalists France 2-1.

Elsewhere, Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Scotland and Belgium all secured victories. Belgium enjoyed comfortable wins over Croatia and Tunisia, while Mexico, fresh off a 5-1 demolition of Serbia on June 4, will look to get the World Cup off to a flying start when they face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in the tournament opener in Mexico City.

At Denmark’s Nature Energy Park today, however, football took a back seat to concern when midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed during the second half of his country's match against Ukraine after briefly clutching his chest. The game was abandoned with Denmark leading 2-1.

Team doctor Morten Boesen later said Eriksen was briefly unconscious but regained consciousness quickly before receiving medical treatment. The incident immediately brought back memories of Euro 2021, when Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest on the field before being revived through life-saving CPR.

Boesen reported that the 34-year-old is in good spirits and will undergo further testing. The Fiasco Mag extends its prayers and best wishes to Eriksen, his family and the Danish team.

Sorry to dampen the mood further, but TT’s men's football team faces another stern examination when it takes on Russia in a friendly on June 9.

With several first-team regulars either excused or deemed unavailable, coach Derek King will consider it a success if his team can avoid a repeat of the 5-0 hammering suffered against South Korea on May 31. Among the absentees are Russian-based forward Levi Garcia and centre back Kobi Henry, who recently became the country's second-youngest captain.

Adding to King's challenges are reports of unpaid player salaries dating back to October 2025. Suffice it to say, he has his work cut out keeping morale high.

From football we move to basketball, where the New York Knicks have stormed to a 2-0 lead in the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs. Led by star guard Jalen Brunson, the Knicks erased a late deficit with an 11-0 run to win Game One 105-95 before edging Game Two 105-104.

New York has now won 13 consecutive playoff games and sits just two victories away from capturing its first NBA title since 1973.

The mood was considerably quieter at Sabina Park in Jamaica yesterday, where the second One-Day International between the West Indies and Sri Lanka was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Sri Lanka lead the series after posting 303 for seven in the opening ODI, powered by a 136-run partnership between captain Kusal Mendis (72) and opener Pathum Nissanka (79). The West Indies will have one final opportunity to level the series in tomorrow’s June 8 decider.
