Double or Nothing: PSG, RCB Deliver Repeat Performances

In English, we call it back-to-back. The French may prefer déjà vu.
Whatever the language, it was a weekend for champions doing it all over again.
Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal in a penalty shootout yesterday to retain their UEFA Champions League (UCL) crown, becoming European champions for a second straight season.
This year's final was a far cry from last season's spectacle, when PSG dismantled Italy's Inter Milan 5-0 to lift the trophy for the first time. Arsenal, meanwhile, put up a far sterner challenge. Though manager Mikel Arteta fell short of delivering what would have been the club's maiden UCL title, the English champions pushed PSG to the brink in Budapest before the dreaded lottery of penalties settled matters after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes.
Closer to home, some fans joked that PSG had saved the world from potential noise pollution by stopping Arsenal in their tracks. Others reckoned the Parisians were simply doing the Lord's work.
Perhaps inspired by the scenes at Budapest's Puskás Aréna, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) produced an encore of their own today, brushing aside the Gujarat Titans to successfully defend their Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
Gujarat's leading run scorers, Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill, combined for just 22 runs as their side stumbled to 155 for eight. In reply, the king of the chase, Virat Kohli, blazed an unbeaten 75 from 42 balls as RCB cruised home with five wickets in hand and two overs to spare.
Adding a touch of Caribbean flavour to the celebration, Romario Shepherd featured on the victorious RCB side, while fellow West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder had to settle for runner-up honours.
Of course, defending a title is never easy.
The outgoing NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, received that reminder last night when they were edged out by the San Antonio Spurs in Game Seven of a thrilling Western Conference Finals series.
Led by French phenom Victor Wembanyama's 22 points, the Spurs secured a 111-103 road victory to eliminate OKC and book an NBA Finals date with the New York Knicks, a rematch of the 1999 championship series.
San Antonio needed only five games to dispatch New York back then. This time, however, Jalen Brunson and company will be hoping to provide a much tougher challenge.
From Oklahoma to Utah, TT's men's football team also endured a difficult night.
Coach Derek King watched his side suffer a 5-0 defeat to South Korea in an international friendly, a result that highlighted the gulf between a nation preparing for the FIFA World Cup and another beginning yet another rebuilding cycle following failed qualification.
For 40 minutes, the Soca Warriors showed resistance. Then South Korea took complete control.
Veteran forward Son Heung-min struck twice in the first half, while Cho Gue-sung matched the feat with a second-half brace as the Asians cruised to victory at BYU South Field.
TT will have another chance to test themselves in nine days when they face Russia. Hopefully, the scoreline will make for friendlier reading for those representing the red, white and black.
While TT will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, it's probably safe to assume a sizeable portion of the nation's football fans will once again be cheering for Brazil.
For their sake, they will be hoping superstar Neymar Jr. can recover in time to play a meaningful role in Carlo Ancelotti's World Cup plans. The 34-year-old is reportedly facing up to three weeks on the sidelines with a right calf strain, placing his availability for Brazil's June 13 opener against Morocco in serious doubt.
Speedy recovery, Neymar. Brazil, and plenty of fans in TT, will be hoping to see you there.
Switching from football to T20 cricket, the West Indies women have begun their Evara Women's International Tri-Series campaign in impressive fashion, recording comfortable victories over Ireland and Pakistan.
The Windies opened with an eight-wicket win over Ireland before following up with a 25-run triumph against Pakistan a day later.
Captain Hayley Matthews and her team will now turn their attention to the 2026 Women's T20 World Cup, where they begin their campaign against defending champions New Zealand on June 13.
