The Hunt is On: City chases, Red Force erases

Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a title race!

Just hours ago, today, April 19, the 2025/26 Premier League script took a sharp turn. Manchester City dismantled table-toppers Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad in a clash that lived up to every ounce of the hype. With this result, Pep Guardiola’s machine moves to 67 points, slicing Arsenal’s lead to a razor-thin three points.

Here’s the math that should keep the North London faithful awake at night: City has six games left, including a game in hand, while Arsenal has only five. After years of carrying the "chokers" tag, Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are desperate to bury the ghost of seasons past. It won't be easy. The city has the bit between their teeth and is clearly smelling blood in the water.

It wasn't all heartbreak for the Gunners this week. Arsenal ground out a 1-0 aggregate win over Sporting to punch their ticket to the UEFA Champions League (UCL) semifinals. While the goals were scarce at the Emirates, the rest of the continent more than made up for it.

In a breathtaking heavyweight bout, Bayern Munich outlasted Real Madrid in a 6-4 aggregate thriller. Despite a spirited brace from Madrid’s Arda Guler, Bayern’s superstars answered the call. Late strikes from Luis Diaz and the irresistible Michael Olise sealed a 4-3 second-leg win, booking a semifinal date with reigning champions PSG.

The Parisians had a smoother ride, cruising past Liverpool 4-0 on aggregate. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid survived a domestic civil war, holding off Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate to secure the final four spot.

The local energy shifted to the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Friday, April 17, but the fairy tale ended in silence. Approximately 2,900 fans watched as the Trinidad and Tobago women’s team saw their World Cup dreams evaporate in a 2-0 loss to El Salvador. Needing a win to reach the Concacaf W Championship, the "Soca Princesses" created openings but were ultimately undone by a clinical brace from Brenda Ceren.

However, in East Trinidad, the story was one of pure dominance. TT’s Under-16 netballers showed exactly why they wear the crown, retaining the Jean Pierre Caribbean Youth Netball title at UWI SPEC. The young ladies were flawless, winning all six matches. In the high-stakes decider against an unbeaten Barbados, the home team rose to the occasion with a crushing 42-21 victory. A special nod to Kelsea Gardner, who walked away with a well-deserved tournament MVP.

Over in the West Indies Championship, the TT Red Force didn't just beat the Leeward Islands Hurricanes, they erased them. An innings and 271-run victory was headlined by a career-defining, unbeaten 203 from Amir Jangoo, with Terrance Hinds punishing the attack for a cool 100 not out.

The Red Force are proving that opening win was no fluke. In their second clash against the Leewards today, pacer Anderson Phillip turned the pitch into a crime scene, ripping through the order with figures of 6 for 38 to bowl them out for just 131. Expect more "resounding" news by this time next week.

Finally, looking ahead to the Caribbean Premier League, the 2026 edition is set to bowl off at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St Vincent on August 7. It’s a historic move, marking the first time CPL matches will hit SVG soil.

The Trinbago Knight Riders head into the season as defending champions, having snatched their fifth title from the Guyana Amazon Warriors in last year’s final.
